Backup tapes stolen? Move your backup procedures
online
Issued by: Network Times
It is every South African CEO's worst nightmare: an
armed gang breaks into your premises, holds up the
security staff and makes off with tens of thousands
of rand worth of high-tech equipment - including your
backup tapes.
Unfortunately this scenario is not fictitious: it
is exactly what happened to a JSE-listed group earlier
this year. Although not guarding against armed robbery
offsite, online backup solutions are being seen as
an essential part of every company's disaster recovery
plans. And South African integrators are taking note
and adding Attix5's online backup solutions to their
services at a rapid rate.
Through the company's partner programme, technology
resellers, service providers and integrators can offer
online backup as part of their overall service to
customers.
Russell Roy, director at Johannesburg-based Internet
specialist Technology Concepts says the Attix5 Backup
Professional solution has been a very successful offering
to his clients.
"Our corporate customers are obviously extremely
concerned about data loss," he says. "Most
have backup tapes, but the systems are rarely automated
and often the tapes do not work. In some cases, we
have seen so-called automated systems where someone
has to physically change the media for it to work.
"If your tapes are lost, stolen or destroyed,
your backup system is rendered useless. Attix5's solution
gives us a means of automating customers' backup procedures
entirely, as well as providing a recovery speed not
available from a tape infrastructure, freeing them
from worry and giving them an insurance policy for
their data."
Technology Concepts started providing companies leased
line Internet connectivity, but with the difference
of taking on the responsibility of providing a complete
end-to-end working solution rather than just a connection.
Roy says Technology Concepts will also be targeting
the small-to-medium sized corporates as well.
"A company with 20 or more seats in its IT infrastructure
can easily afford the Attix5 solution for a small
monthly fee, especially when you consider the alternative
- data recovery - which can start at over three thousand
rand per drive."
Attix5 Backup Professional is a secure, automated
offsite backup system for data stored on company servers.
It relieves overburdened or non-existent IT staff
from the chore of tape backup and manual offsite storage
and replaces this with a secure, reliable, offsite
solution that protects data. The entire Attix5 product
suite is designed to minimise the impact on your Internet
link, which it does by only transferring data which
has changed since the previous backup.
As well as being a connectivity, consulting and Web
development company, Technology Concepts has also
developed a bandwidth management device to prioritise
important traffic. The company prides itself in understanding
a customers business requirements and being able to
offer cost effective technology solutions.
